Cannabis Storage 101: How to Keep Cannabis Fresh

How Long Does Cannabis Actually Stay Fresh?

Keep in mind, however, that potency will decrease over time, no matter the storage method. Cannabis doesn’t expire in the sense that old, dry flower will hurt you, but it will underdeliver. Signs that cannabis has gone past its prime include:

• Visible mold
• Noticeably weaker effect

What Actually Degrades Your Cannabis

1. Air: Every time you leave a lid off or store flower in a loose baggie, you’re introducing oxygen that oxidizes cannabinoids and terpenes at a molecular level.
2. Light: The same UV radiation that fades your furniture breaks down cannabinoids over time. In particular, THC converts to CBN with exposure to light.
3. Heat: Terpenes, the compounds responsible for flavor and aroma, dry out at any temperature above 77°F. Heat also accelerates the decarboxylation process and invites mold or mildew.
4. Humidity: This is the trickiest variable, because it can be too high or too low. Too much humidity invites mold, and too little turns flower dry, brittle, and harsh to smoke.

It’s important to understand that the packaging cannabis comes in is not meant for long-term preservation. Once opened, your cannabis should be moved to a more viable storage option.

Best Containers for Keeping Cannabis Fresh

Airtight glass is the gold standard for cannabis storage containers. Mason jars work well and are very affordable. UV-resistant or amber glass is even better, as it blocks light without being in a drawer or cabinet. Glass doesn’t carry a static charge or leach chemicals, and it creates an airtight seal when closed properly.

When humidity is too high, flower will feel spongy or damp to the touch. It may have white fuzzy patches of mold or a musty smell.

Flower

This is the most storage-sensitive format. Use a glass jar with a properly sized humidity pack and keep it in a cool, dark place. Don’t refrigerate, as the temperature cycling and moisture fluctuations degrade flower faster.

Edibles

Most edibles do best in cool and dry conditions. Baked goods or chocolate-based edibles benefit from being refrigerated in a sealed container if the packaging recommends it. Gummies are usually fine at room temperature, but should be stored away from heat and sunlight.

Concentrates

These should be stored in glass containers, but never in plastic, as they can bond to it. Heat quickly degrades concentrates and impacts their consistency, so storage in a cool place is especially important here.

Vape Cartridges

Cold can thicken the oil in a vape cartridge and increase clogs, while heat degrades the distillate and compromises the hardware seal. Keep vape cartridges stored upright at room temperature to keep them clog-free and potent as long as possible.

Can You Freeze Cannabis?

Freezing cannabis is generally not recommended for everyday consumers. Extremely cold temperatures can make the delicate trichomes brittle, causing them to break off when the flower is handled. 

Unless you’re preserving cannabis for long-term extraction or another specialized purpose, a cool, dark cabinet is usually the better choice.
